Generic Ampicillin
( Acillin )
Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, where it targets susceptible bacteria. It is also used for urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly those caused by E. coli and other gram-negative organisms. For gastrointestinal infections like salmonellosis and shigellosis, ampicillin can be effective in reducing bacterial load. In cases of bacterial meningitis, especially in infants and children, ampicillin is often combined with other antibiotics for enhanced efficacy. It also treats certain sexually transmitted infections, such as gonorrhea, though resistance has increased in recent years. Additionally, ampicillin is prescribed for skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible strains of staphylococci and streptococci. Its effectiveness depends on proper dosing and bacterial susceptibility testing.
